In
1968, a group of predominately Puerto Rican community activists
stared down Boston’s urban renewal bulldozers and organized
to gain control over the development of their neighborhood.
Forming Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción (IBA), these
activists developed Villa Victoria (Victory Village), a 435
unit affordable housing community in the city’s South
End neighbothood. The development of Villa Victoria is an
accomplishment considered to be a seminal moment in the history
of affordable housing, civil rights and community organizing
in Boston. For over four decades, IBA has developed a nationally
repicable model for new urbanism that links affordable housing
with supportive programming.
Mission
Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción (IBA) is a dynamic community
building agency dedicated to increasing the social and economic
power of individuals and families through education, economic
development, technology and arts programming that builds safe,
vibrant and culturally diverse affordable housing communities.
Volunteers are an integral part of the work that IBA does.
Our volunteers assist in areas that range from tutoring and
mentoring our youth to beautification and gardening projects.
The important work of our volunteers is best demonstrated
at the yearly Festival Betances, where without their incredible
enthusiasm and dedication, this well-known folk arts festival
could not be as successful.
If you want to become one of these inspiring, highly
motivated volunteers that help IBA achieve its mission, please
call (617) 927-1707 or email your resume and cover letter
to odauhajre@iba-etc.org.
